What the bible says about Judging

Romans 2:1-16

What the Bible Says About Judging

Sermon by Rev. Julius A. Harper, Senior Pastor Santa Clarita Christian Fellowship

Romans 2:1-8,16 (NLT)
1  You may think you can condemn such people, but you are just as bad, and you have no excuse! When you say they are wicked and should be punished, you are condemning yourself, for you who judge others do these very same things.
2  And we know that God, in his justice, will punish anyone who does such things.
3  Since you judge others for doing these things, why do you think you can avoid God’s judgment when you do the same things?
4  Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?
5  But because you are stubborn and refuse to turn from your sin, you are storing up terrible punishment for yourself. For a day of anger is coming, when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.
6  He will judge everyone according to what they have done.
7  He will give eternal life to those who keep on doing good, seeking after the glory and honor and immortality that God offers.
8  But he will pour out his anger and wrath on those who live for themselves, who refuse to obey the truth and instead live lives of wickedness.
16  And this is the message I proclaim—that the day is coming when God, through Christ Jesus, will judge everyone’s secret life.

May the Lord add a blessing to the reading and the hearing of HIS holy word.

In the 1st chapter of our study through the letter to the church at Rome we learned several important lessons about God’s wrath toward the unsaved world.

The world that we live in is full of sinfulness and brokenness and that has come about as a result of man’s rejection of God. Because the world rejected God and pushed back against his involvement in their lives, God has turned the world over to the consequences of sinful rejection.

When I delivered that sermon a few weeks ago, there were a lot of “AMENS” and nods of agreement, when the hammer was being brought down on the unsaved and rebellious world, noting that God had turned the world over to purse the sinfulness that is a part of humanity and we talked about the evidence of that.

Today, it is highly possible that the room may be much quieter, because chapter two takes an interesting turn in that having laid down such a damaging case for God’s wrath against the unsaved world, the writer now pivots to speak to the good folks; the moral people if you please, the ones who would assent to the correctness of the observations about the world.

Now part of the reason why Paul is doing this is to demonstrate the reality that there is NONE righteous not even the “good” folks.

Before he gets to chapter three Paul is going to hit everybody, he will speak to the religious person, he will speak to the Jew, he is going to make the case 100% clear that there is NONE righteous no not one.

Personally, I found this teaching to be very challenging and convicting. Not only did I learn some things, but I was also chastised personally regarding some areas in my life that needed to be brought under the submission of God.

Is a sermon on the subject of what the bible says about judging a topic that is for the church today…you bet it is.

It is a topic for you as a member of this or maybe any other church; for the Spirit of criticism and the air of moral superiority, is so pervasive that we don’t often recognize how common it is.

The critical attitudes, the inward comparisons and evaluations of others too often finds it’s ugly face being displayed in the church and is frequently at the heart of a lack of love and a lack of compassion and an environment that causes people to run away from the church rather than to run to it.

So when the bible speaks about this subject, you and I ought to pay close attention and listen so that we can learn what is right, what is wrong and who’s job it is from a biblical perspective, when it comes to the topic of judging.

What the bible says about judging is…..FIRSTLY

  1. It is wrong and an offense towards God when we set ourselves up as judges of other people.

Romans 2:1 (NLT)
1  You may think you can condemn such people, but you are just as bad, and you have no excuse! When you say they are wicked and should be punished, you are condemning yourself, for you who judge others do these very same things.

Romans 2:1 (Every Day Bible) If you think that you can judge others, then you are wrong. You too are guilty of sin. You judge people but you do the same bad things they do. So when you judge you will really be judging yourself guilty.

Romans 14:4 (ASV)
4  Who art thou that judgest the servant of another? to his own lord he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be made to stand; for the Lord hath power to make him stand.

Romans 14:13 (NLT)
13  So let’s stop condemning each other. Decide instead to live in such a way that you will not cause another believer to stumble and fall.

In this first point, we note that even as Paul speaks of the sinfulness of the unsaved world and God’s wrath towards it, he speaks to the moral person on the topic of the error of judging others.

The word judge here in the Greek is the word KRINO that means to criticize, to find fault and or to condemn others.

Now this is a HUGE subject without a doubt, because it is a SIN that is rampant among human beings and massively problematic and pervasive in the church.

Thought:

For several nights after I had completed my first draft of the sermon, this point woke me up and challenged me personally.

Because sizing people up is something that I’ve done all of my life, judging people is something that I have found to be an area of challenge for me and very likely many of you struggle with this too. We are so prone to judging others that we don’t even realize that we are engaged in a terrible sin.

In a single word.

In a single thought; in our attitudes towards other people; we have evaluated the worth of the person; we have made an internal analysis, we have summed up the person’s entire life and defined them by a SINGLE word, their value, their motivations, their thoughts and their performance, is measured based on our own understanding and a distorted view of ourselves, in which we take on the role of God in finding fault and condemning others, based on our insights and our personal standards, which are flawed on every level you could imagine.

THOUGHT:

Think about the ridiculousness of this and how offensive this must be to God.

A person who has issues of his or her own has set himself up as a judge or a critic or an evaluator of others.

So when you or I look at a person and say within our selves, she’s a flake. She isn’t about nothing; he doesn’t cut it; he’s lacking the right stuff, she’s got a problem in side of her, nah…nope, she’s not right, nope you are not worthy of my respect; nope you don’t measure up to my standards, nope you don’t cut it in my book, you missed the mark and you are NOT in the same category as me, and here is the big one…you ain’t saved…..could hardly be considered a child of God.

Some times it’s not even words we use, it’s just a HUMP…it’s in inward dismissal of the person who we’ve judged.

Paul asks the question Romans 14:4 (ASV)…and watch this it says..
4  Who art thou that judgest the servant of another? to his own lord he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be made to stand; for the Lord hath power to make him stand.

Think of it like this….

If another employee works at McDonalds and you are an employee at Burger King, why in the world would you be making an evaluation of the person who works in another store and reports to someone else; why would we try to do the job of judging the servant of another, when in fact the supervisor at Burger KING owns the BURGER KING also owns the McDonalds that YOU WORK AT.

And that owner/manager who owns the BURGER KING and the McDonalds and who you both work for is able to not only able evaluate HIS servant, but is able to help that servant to STAND up do a better job; yes he may have burned a burger, but you burn burgers all of the time and then you toss them in the garbage, thinking no one can see.

It is wrong for HUMAN’s to set ourselves up as evaluators and critics of other people and we have to guard against sitting in the place of God.

We have to work at that, we have to be careful and we have to make sure not to think the worst of people and measure people and their value.

We have to guard against that, while at the same time, not falling for the perverted lie that the world has tried to put out there.

People outside and inside of the church have a few pet scriptures they use and here is one that is often thrown out there, where the words of Jesus are quoted.

Matthew 7:1 says Matthew 7:1 (NKJV)
1  “Judge not, that you be not judged.

Matthew Henry’s commentary on this passage is very helpful “We must judge ourselves, and judge of our own acts, but not make our word a law to everybody. We must not judge rashly, “We must not make (think) the worst of people”

Judge not does not mean that a person is to pretend that SINNING and or violating God’s word isn’t wrong or that danger isn’t dangerous.

And it is very important that you get this clear in your mind, because HUMAN BEINGS in our brokenness have twisted the words of Jesus as a weapon or hammer to promote the idea that SINFULNESS should be ignored and that you are wrong to let the person know that God’s word says, for example that it’s wrong for you to be sleeping with someone you are not married to, or to be carrying on in a way that is contrary to God’s word.

You as a person have to make judgments all of the time. You have to judge whether to walk across the street or whether you need to stand still, you have to judge whether or not your children should spend the night at someone’s house or not because there isn’t anyone there to supervise the but when you SAY…AHH that family is jacked up cause the mama ain’t about nothing, PHEW…they are below me, now you are judging that person.

What the bible says about judging number one is that we have absolutely no business being judges of other people…secondly the bible says that….

  1. He (God) is the only one who can judge rightly, according to truth

Romans 2:2 (NLT)

2  And we know that God, in his justice, will punish anyone who does such things.

Romans 2:2 (Every Day Bible) God judges those who do wrong things. And we know that God is judging right.

Romans 2:4-5 (NLT)
4  Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?
5  But because you are stubborn and refuse to turn from your sin, you are storing up terrible punishment for yourself. For a day of anger is coming, when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.

Ecclesiastes 12:14 (NKJV)

14  For God will bring every work into judgment, Including every secret thing, Whether good or evil.

In the first point, I believe that it was pretty clear from a biblical and practical perspective, why we as persons have no business being judges of others.

Romans chapter 2 verses 4-5, really breaks down the details here and challenges us to recognize that God is the only one who is capable of judging rightly and truthfully.

The problem with our judging and the idea of a human being judging another human being isn’t related to our intelligence; there is where we get tripped up.

The problem isn’t with your MOTHER WIT, or insights or even experience as a man or woman, the issue is related to our inability to process reality correctly and to not be tripped up by our own stubbornness, pride and sin.

You see, even though we are saved our minds are still effected and infected with the limitations of human flesh, that has the capability to misunderstand and mis-apply the grace and kindness of God or to think that because God hasn’t spanked us yet that somehow the patience of God and the kindness of God, or your good fortune, which is a gift FROM God is an indication that we are better than other folks.

Human’s have the capacity and the capability of harboring all kinds of hidden inner sins of the heart mind and attitude, while at the same time resisting the Holy Spirit and the word of God and that makes it IMPOSSIBLE for us to operate in pure truth.

Only God knows what is spoken of in the inner chambers of the heart of a man, only God has the capability of uncovering truth in its purest form, only God can approach a situation from the stand point of his total perfection and the word of God tells us that this is exactly what God will do.

Ecclesiastes 12:14 says For God will bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil.

God is the only ONE who can judge rightly according to the truth, we have absolutely no business trying to do what only he can do, that is what we learn here and that is what we are now responsible to operate in light of….

What the bible says about judging number three is…

  1. He (God) judges the actions of men.

Romans 2:6-7 (NLT)
6  He will judge everyone according to what they have done.

Romans 2:13 (NLT)
13  For merely listening to the law doesn’t make us right with God. It is obeying the law that makes us right in his sight.

Romans 2:6-9 (ASV)
6  who will render to every man according to his works:
7  to them that by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and incorruption, eternal life:
8  but unto them that are factious, and obey not the truth, but obey unrighteousness, shall be wrath and indignation,
9  tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that worketh evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Greek;

1 Corinthians 6:9a (NLT)
9  Don’t you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don’t fool yourselves.

Now I am aware that this third point has the capability to cause some discomfort in the room today, because of the human tendency to resist the concept of accountability and evaluation.

Be clear that this point isn’t related to your salvation nor am I positing the notion that you can be saved by your works.

We are saved, I am saved, you are saved because of the redemptive work of Jesus Christ on the cross and having become a recipient of that by faith in Jesus, I now stand as a servant of his, who will be evaluated and held accountable for the life I have lead, having obtained this great salvation, by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ.

What the scripture is teaching us about is that all aspects of judgment and the right to do so, are firmly and exclusively in the hands of God and that applies to the both Jews and Greeks.

Romans 2 verse 6 tells us in no uncertain terms that God will judge everyone according to what they have done.

Romans 2:13 tells us that it isn’t just about listening, but it is about OBEYING God that makes us right in his sight.

1st Corinthians 6:9a says “don’t fool yourselves”

Those who are saved need to understand and be clear that merely listening without doing “catches the attention of God” being saved by grace, not withstanding.

Those who are saved need to understand that merely listening without doing will have in impact on the conversation and evaluation that will take place when we stand before our Lord.

“to every man according to his works:
7  to them that by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and incorruption, eternal life:
8  but unto them that are factious, and obey not the truth, but obey unrighteousness, shall be wrath and indignation,
9  tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that worketh evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Greek

What the bible tells us about judgment is that it’s God’s right and it is God’s position and it is something that God will do.

Paul here in the word of God is telling us that God judges everyone.

Everyone gets it, every rebel gets served, the Jew who knew the word of God, the Jew who had to promises of God and his law, the Christian who obtained the blessing of God’s grace, yet turned their back on his blood and pursued rebellion and foolishness; the Jew, the Christian and the Greek everyone gets judged by God without exception.

What the bible says about judging 4thly is that…..

  1. God judges without respect of persons.

Romans 2:11-12 (NLT)
11  For God does not show favoritism.
12  When the Gentiles sin, they will be destroyed, even though they never had God’s written law. And the Jews, who do have God’s law, will be judged by that law when they fail to obey it.

Romans 1:18 (ASV)

18  For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hinder the truth in unrighteousness;

2 Corinthians 5:10 (NKJV)

10  For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

Malachi 4:1 (NLT)
1  The LORD of Heaven’s Armies says, “The day of judgment is coming, burning like a furnace. On that day the arrogant and the wicked will be burned up like straw. They will be consumed—roots, branches, and all.

Thought:

What the bible says about judgment 4thly is that everyone is going to be subject to it .

God shows no favoritism and all will be judged. This is tough for many people to embrace because in this society favoritism and exceptions, and YES BUT and special treatment based on class, or background or gender are legion and wide spread.

Christians will stand before the judgment seat of Christ and will receive rewards or lose rewards based on the things done in the body, but a born again child of God will not be condemned to a devil’s hell. His salvation will not be lost, because he never earned it.

Unbelievers will stand before the great white throne of judgment, naked and without the covering of the blood of Jesus Christ; their works will be judged and found wanting, their actions will shrink into nothingness as their deeds are revealed to be sinful and anyone which will include all sinners who die in their sins without the cleansing forgiveness of salvation through Jesus Christ, will be cast into the lake of fire . One that day the arrogant, the know it all, the rejecter of God and all of the wicked will be burned up like straw, consumed, says Malachi, roots, branches and all.

Romans 2:12 tells us that judgment comes even on folks who have not heard the gospel and this answers an often raised question and here Paul answers it in this letter because as we read in verse 15 and let me quote it in-case you forgot what we read.. 15  They demonstrate that God’s law is written in their hearts, for their own conscience and thoughts either accuse them or tell them they are doing right.

In other words, even though there are people who have not heard the word of God preached to them or read it, God put the law of right and wrong in their hearts and they know about sin and what they are doing regardless.

Judgment comes down on everyone, without exception and without respect of persons.

My unsaved friend this may be difficult to hear and it may not be the way you’d like the truth told to you.

It may not make sense in your mind, but the facts are the facts, therefore you’ve got a decision to make, because the truth and the reality of it has been explained to you.

Don’t waste time thinking about the person in the jungles of the undeveloped world and how God is going to deal with them. God has got that handed, what you need to be concerned about BIG TIME is the issue of your eternal soul because on the day you stand before this HOLY GOD, to answer for your life, you will be without excuse on the day of judgment, without a doubt.

5th and finally what the bible says about judging is that…

  1. God judges and will judge according to the secrets of the heart.

Romans 2:16 (NLT)
16  And this is the message I proclaim—that the day is coming when God, through Christ Jesus, will judge everyone’s secret life.

Romans 2:16 (Everyday Bible) All these things will happen on the day when God will judge the secret thoughts of people’s hearts. The good news, that I preach says that God will judge everyone through Christ Jesus

Matthew 25:32-34 (ASV)

32  and before him shall be gathered all the nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as the shepherd separated the sheep from the goats;
33  and he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.
34  Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

The day nor the hour isn’t given in scripture, but it is a specific day known to God.

In that day, the secrets of men’s hearts will be revealed; nothing that is covered will be hidden in that day, the thoughts of man’s heart, the processing of his mind and intellect; the hidden forms of rebellion and dismissal if applicable will be laid bare.

Every deed and action and the motivations associated therewith will be revealed by God and subjected to the penetrating truth of God’s all knowing power and wisdom.

Every secret thing, every work, every sin will be processed by the one who has earned the right to judge, because of the perfect and sinless life that he lived and experienced walking right here on this earth, experiencing the same temptations that you and I face every day YET Jesus dealt with them without sin.

All will stand before this holy God and the rule that will be applied with be the truth of God’s word and his love as revealed in the good news of the gospel.

So him that rejected the love of God will be found guilty, as well as the person who ignored it, and who treated it with distain.

On that day hundreds of millions and maybe even billions will hear “depart from me, ye worker of iniquity I never knew you”

If you didn’t understand anything about judgment, if you didn’t know what the bible says about it, today, unless you’ve just blocked your ears completely, you have been told and are now accountable.

Christian, child of God, church member, believer, preacher, pastor, elder, deacon, church mother….if you’ve been guilty of judging others; this word is a call to repent and to recognize the wrongness of this based on the word of God.

God has made it clear, that in judging others we are actually bringing down terrible punishment upon our selves.

Sinner man, if you’ve never been told the truth about accountability, you heard it today and you need to make a decision today and right NOW.

If you died tonight without Christ as LORD of your LIFE you will open your eyes in the presence of almighty God and you will stand before him in the nakedness of your un-forgiven sins

Now what I am telling you isn’t about judging YOU. I don’t have the right to judge you, because I’m a broken person just like you, the only difference is that I am saved by the grace of God.

What I am telling you about, is the GOSPEL. It’s the good news; that you just like me, can be saved from the penalty of the sin that has earned you a ticket to HELL.

I’m here to tell you that in no way can I look down my nose at your sins, because those same sins or even worse, plagued my life before Jesus came in to be my LORD.

I am here to tell you the good news that God in his love, made a way of escape for me and for you too if you are willing to embrace and accept it.

And the way of escape and forgiveness is through faith in Jesus Christ, God’s own Son who died on the cross to pay the price for your sins, so that you could avoid the ultimate judgment that leads to eternal damnation.

While all eyes are closed and heads are bowed.

God’s Wrath Revealed

Sermon by Rev. Julius A. Harper, Santa Clarita Christian Fellowship.

God’s Wrath Revealed

Romans 1:18, 24-29a

Romans 1:18 (NKJV)
18  For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,

Romans 1:24-29a (NKJV)
24  Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves,
25  who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
26  For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature.
27  Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.
28  And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting;
29  being filled with all unrighteousness…,

MAY THE LORD ADD A BLESSING TO THE READING AND THE HEARING OF HIS HOLY WORD.

When we were last here in the Epistle to the church at ROME, we looked at and examined the issues of God’s wrath and why God is displeased with the unsaved world.

In the sermon I presented, the approach was somewhat similar to that of a prosecutor, stating if you please God’s case against this world and outlining the details of mankind’s unrighteous rebellion against God and how and why God’s wrath is justified.

In that sermon, the case against man was pretty damaging. The evidence was powerful and the case for God’s condemnation was clear to see, yet in spite of the overwhelming evidence and the reality of what man had earned we were able to balance that sermon with the reality of God’s incredible love and grace, noting that in spite of man’s overwhelming guilt and the punishment we so justly earned, God in his great love and mercy has extended salvation to all through faith in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, to those who embrace the gift of God through Jesus Christ by placing their faith in trust in him.

Today, we more or less pick up the continuing subject, noting from the scripture how God’s wrath is revealed in the world today.

Thought:

The world we live is a broken world, a world of decay and sin and murder and all manner of negativity which has happened as a result of man’s fallen state and the chaos which erupted when Adam and Eve decided to disobey and defy the living God.

When man sinned against God, there was a breaking of the relationship which existed before the fall, wherein man and God were at peace.

When man sinned, his world shifted and man who was created to be a ruling partner with God here on this earth, instead received death and damnation.

Romans 6:23 tells us that the wages of sin is death.

When man sinned against God, he died spiritually, but there were also other consequences of the fall.

When man sinned and turned against God, that sin opened the door to a rebellion that began and indeed continues to this very day in which man began to disrespect God and to bring upon them selves God’s wrath.

Now at points this sermon may be upsetting to some of you today, especially to the unsaved, but it is imperative that we understand the reality of God’s wrath and the sinful depravity of man, because without it, we cannot really embrace our need for a savior, nor the beauty and power of what Jesus did for us on the cross at Calvary.

The wrath of God and learning about it, may be upsetting but the wrath of God is not the end of the story, for in-spite of the fact that his wrath is a reality and we as people have earned the wages thereof, God in his great love and mercy was willing to send his only begotten Son, Jesus the Christ to give his life on the cross to save sinful man.

The bible says that God’s wrath is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men. His wrath and the revelation of it, is a reaction to the rebellion of man. Because mankind continued to resist and reject God, God gave man up and today as we examine the scriptures we will see the evidence of that.

My prayer and my desire today as we explore what may certainly be a TOUGH subject is that you and I will more clearly see and understand the reality of the world around us and why the world is in such trouble and that we may more fully embrace and appreciate the love and grace of God who desires to save us from the ultimate wrath to come, which is the destruction of this world and the loss of souls to a devil’s hell forever.

Let’s look to the scriptures to see and learn about the wrath of God and how it is revealed to us today.

God’s wrath and displeasure with the world today is revealed in that…

  1. God (has) allowed men to do as they willed.

Romans 1:24b (NLT)
24  So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired.

 Romans 1:24b(NKJV)
24  Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts,

Psalm 81:11-12 (NLT)

11  “But no, my people wouldn’t listen. Israel did not want me around.
12  So I let them follow their own stubborn desires, living according to their own ideas.

Isaiah 65:2-3a (NKJV)

2  I have stretched out My hands all day long to a rebellious people, Who walk in a way that is not good, According to their own thoughts;
3  A people who provoke Me to anger continually to My face;

 Romans 1:24 a (Everyday Bible)
24a  “People were full of sin, wanting only to do evil. So God let them go their sinful way.

If you want to understand the degree to which God is displeased with the unbelieving world, I would like you to consider the power and punishment of being “Given Up”….repeat that phrase..

In our previous sermon when we looked at chapter 1 verse 19-23, we talked about the rebellion and rejection of men against God and how humanity rejects the consciousness of God and jettisons God from their mind because folks simply don’t want to think about God and or entertain the proof of his existence.

We touched upon the reality of how folks reject the evidence of God as seen through the heavens and the order of the universe, we talked about the refusal of HUMANITY to honor God and to be thankful and then we touched upon the issue of pride.

If you want to understand the evidence of God’s wrath and the proof of it, consider if you would please the concept of God giving man “over” to do as they pleased.

God’s wrath is revealed in that God has said to man, OK go on with your bad self, I’m giving you up…

“I’m going to stop fighting you and I’m going to let you experience the consequences of having your own way and doing your own thing”

God said by his action, I’m going let you have just what you want and I’m going to let you suffer the consequences of what it means to be on your own and to do your own thing.

Thought:

Those of you who are parents and or those who understand the dynamics of what is involved in being a responsible parent understand a terrible truth….

If you want to jack up the life of your child, cut him loose and let him or her do exactly what the child wants and in a short time and without fail you will see the foolishness that is in that child’s heart, bring him or her to a place of pain and destruction.

This is what God did. He responded to the constant rebellion and fighting of the child by saying I’m lifting my restraining hand and I’m going to let you do exactly as you please.

And my friends let me tell you so that you are perfectly clear, this reality is in no way a blessing, nor is it anything to celebrate or be happy about on any level, for when God lifts his hand, sin and the reality of it, takes over and mankind is left without God, vulnerable to the worse possible life one can imagine.

And if you are honest about the world we live in today, the evidence of God’s wrath is clearly seen in what is happening in modern society.

This world is coming apart at the seams; every kind of malignant sin is exploding.

Things you would have never thought or imagined are becoming common place and it is happening, not because God put it on man, but it is happening because God withdrew his restraining hand from the rebellious sinner and let the sinner have what the sinner wanted to pursue.

If you want to know that God’s wrath is real, just look at the reality of what has happened as a result of God giving the world up to the sin and filth that is in the heart of man.

So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired.

First we learn that God gave them up to do as the willed….secondly we see that

God’s wrath is revealed in that…

  1. God gave men up to uncleanness.

Romans 1:24c-25a (NKJV)
24  to dishonor their bodies among themselves,
25  who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator,

(SCREENS)

Romans 1:24b (Everyday Bible)
24b  They became full of sexual sin, using their bodies wrongly with each other.

Ephesians 4:19 (NLT)
19  They have no sense of shame. They live for lustful pleasure and eagerly practice every kind of impurity.

2 Timothy 3:1-2a (YLT)
1  And this know thou, that in the last days there shall come perilous times,
2  for men shall be lovers of themselves

The consequences of man’s rejection of God and the wrath of God is revealed not by simply leaving man but by also allowing humankind to wallow in the filthy mess that he creates with his sinful mind.

If you doubt in your mind the reality of God’s wrath and his displeasure with the unsaved rebellious world, open your eyes to the truth of this second point as evidenced in the world we live in today.

Not only has God given folks up to their own devices, but he has also in that releasing of man to pursue his sinful free will, allowed the filth that is in man to come out.

In other words when God threw up his hands, the foolishness that was in broken man came out and began to manifest itself in various forms of uncleanness and filthy actions.

Matthew Chapter 7 reminds us, that it is what is “in side of man” that defiles him.

Dictionary.com defines uncleanness as a moral blemish; it is related to the idea of that which is evil. This is a word that speaks to the baser desires and lusts of the heart, mind, eyes and flesh. The cravings that are deep within the recesses of our minds; the filth that is inside of folks that each one of us know would go off if there were not laws to restrain us.

Romans 24 spoke of a dishonoring of the body between people.

Ephesians spoke of the lack of shame, the openness to celebrate filth and perversion, which we see in every aspect of our society today.

When God threw up his hands, the foolishness that is resident in the heart of man simply began to manifest itself; this is why we see people going off into all kind of freaky behaviors and public exhibitions. This is why our daughters are sending nude pictures of themselves to boys on face book, acting as it where as peudo-porn stars at the age of 13.

The filth that is resident in man happens when God is pushed out and he finally says ok and lifts his influence and restraint.

They began to dishonor their bodies among themselves, says Romans 1:24c, but listen also to the “a” portion of verse 25 where it says “who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator”

God gave man up to what was in him and he also allowed mankind to become a victim of his own lies and self-delusion.

We see that in the world today folks are going buck wild they have lost a sense of shame and have thrown themselves full force into the pursuit of every kind of impurity.

Not only that, but as the scripture records, they exchange the truth of God for a lie rejecting the worship of the one true creator God and instead exchanging true worship for the idols of human flesh. Rejecting Jesus the creator and instead lifting up and venerating man as the center of the universe worshiping not only the creature in that sense of the word, but worshiping themselves.

Living for themselves, focusing on themselves, lovers of themselves, rather than God who is worthy to be honored and adored with all our hearts and minds and strength.

Men changed the truth of God into a lie and desired the lie more. Men rejected the light and desired darkness, so God gave them up to it.

God’s wrath is revealed in that…

  1. God gave mankind up to vile affections.

Romans 1:26-27 (NKJV)
26  For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature.
27  Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.

Genesis 19:4-5 (NLT)
4  But before they retired for the night, all the men of Sodom, young and old, came from all over the city and surrounded the house.
5  They shouted to Lot, “Where are the men who came to spend the night with you? Bring them out to us so we can have sex with them!”

Leviticus 18:23 (NKJV)
23  Nor shall you mate with any animal, to defile yourself with it. Nor shall any woman stand before an animal to mate with it. It is perversion.

Here in the passage as we drill down deeper, we gain an understanding of the various levels of sinfulness that are part of the broken human condition.

Because people rejected God, he gave them up to unnatural passions.

This third point provides an important distinction from the previous in that the use of the word PASSIONS speaks of that which cannot be controlled or governed, no matter how much a person may try to master them.

Now this is heavy duty and it is evidence of God’s displeasure and his wrath towards the sinful world.

God gave them up to vile Passions…..

Thought:

When a person is gripped by a passion for something, there is a controlling and slavish element to it. Passion speaks of a degree of extravagance or enthusiasm on a level that supersedes a normal interest. It is a burning if you please that takes hold of a person and drives them.

Now we know that passion can be fantastic. Passion for the Lord, Passion for sharing the gospel, this is what a Christian should have and when that is a part of your life, it’s a wonderful thing.

But when the passion is connected to something that is unnatural that is not a blessing but it is a curse.

When a passion is connected to something that harms and or degrades a person’s life AND it is hard to control or manage, that Passion turns the person into a SLAVE.

If you are willing to be honest about it, this is what we see in the world today.

Here in the passage, the writer describes this exact condition, women, burning with passion in a way that is totally the opposite of God’s natural design; exchanging the natural use and doing that which fits into no design whatsoever.

The term vile affections, includes the concept of disgraceful, degrading, and dishonorable actions.

The consequences of man’s rejection of God, is God’s wrath revealed, in sinful man being given up, to purse the shameful and filthy lust that is in them.

Thought:

Now make sure that you don’t hear this wrongly, because there is a mind set out there that will pervert the word of God and began to blame GOD for the passions that are causing their lives to spiral out of control.

God did not create this, he did not put this in folks, man in HIS FREE WILL and the cravings thereof, pursues these things and since man no longer wants God…GOD let’s them go for what they want.

In the book of Genesis, we read just a portion of the story of what happened to the Angels when they came to the city of Sodom to visit Lot and his family.

Sodom was a city that was given over completely to sexual perversion; all the men both young and old were wholly and totally given over to wanting other men in the way that God designed a man to want a woman sexually.

The whole town was full of sexual deviants, who surrounded the house of Lot, demanding that they be given an opportunity to express their lust for the male body, rather than the female body, which was created and designed perfectly by God for a man.

Every vile deed is in broken man, the desire not only to pursue unrighteous and unnatural acts with members of the same sex, but also with animals too.

In other words, there is a bunch of strange passions and strange desires that are in man and have been around for a long time.

God did not make people that way; it is a choice to purse and to be open to the sin that is in broken man.

And remember if you please what James taught us about in chapter one, somewhere around verse 14-15… it starts in the mid and in the desire that is in a person…

And if the mind and imagination are unleashed then sin, having been conceived in the mind will purse the sinful thought to a real experience or conclusions.

God’s wrath is REAL and it revealed in that…

  1. God gave mankind up to depraved and empty minds.

Romans 1:28 (NKJV)
28  And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind.

Romans 1:28a-b (NLT)
28a-b  Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their foolish thinking…

Romans 1:29-30 (NLT)
29  Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip.
30  They are backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful. They invent new ways of sinning, and they disobey their parents.

In Romans 1:28 which I used to set the basis for this 4th point, we read two different versions of the passage, one translation said a debased mind the other said “foolish thinking”

From Romans chapter 1 verse 29-30 and the NLT, we looked at hideous list of the kinds of things, which I believed flowed out of the reality of the wrath of God, being evidenced in man being given up to minds and hearts and attitudes which reject everything about God and consequently result in, the kinds of negative things which people have become “FULL of”

God’s wrath is shown and the reality of it is revealed in the truth of men’s minds and the mindset we see in the world today.

The King James Version of Romans 1:28 used the term “reprobate mind” the NLT uses the term foolish thinking and the New King James said debased.

I expressed this 4th point using the term “empty”, which to me speaks most powerfully about the reality of what has happened to people and they way they think today.

Because the world has rejected God and refused the knowledge of God, the mind has become empty of God and instead become “full of every kind of evil and sin”

This is nothing new by the way, this is what God has seen since the day that man embraced sin and disobedience the first time in the garden.

Adam and Eve refused to retain God’s word in their minds and instead embraced independence.

When God looked down upon the children of men and he looked into the heart of man, it grieved him says Genesis 6:5 that every imagination of the thoughts of man was only evil continually.

This is the world we live in today, a world of greed and hate.

A world of injustice and racism. A world of competition and covetousness where there is a lust for more and more.

This is the world we live in today, where malice and viciousness is evident in the way we treat each other and what we say to each other and how we kill and maim our fellow man with unkind and hurtful words.

This is a world of envy, that goes beyond simply being jealous, but rather it is a spirit, that wants to take what others have and to destroy them.

This is the world we live in a world of mayhem and murder, children are snatched from parks, people are blown up in the shopping malls, killing is celebrated and glorified in movies, television shows and video games.

This is the world we live in where strife and fighting characterize human relationships and politics.

A world of backbiters and gossipers, a world of lying and deceit, a world that hates God and wants nothing to do with him.

A world that is proud and haughty, boasters and braggarts, pretenders and phonies, inventors of new forms of evil, that rejects authority and celebrates filth.

This is the world with out mercy, unwilling to make peace or come to an agreement or consider others.

A world that is cursed and controlled by arrogant children who disrespect their parents, who disobey and disregard instruction and embrace all forms of evil and vice.

This is what God gave the world up to, he didn’t make the world this way, he simply gave the world what the world wanted, in response to their rejection of him.

CLOSE:

The wrath of God is deserved by man without a doubt and the world deserves the pouring out of his indignation for sure.

If God were to simply close the book on man and let his wrath takes it’s full course with God destroying this world entirely, such a decision would be just and deserved….

But I am here to declare to you the wonder of God’s grace and salvation through faith in Jesus Christ

John 3:16 tells us that God so loved the world so much that he gave his only son, to save us from being lost.

God in his mercy, rather than giving the world what we so clearly have earned, actually wants to save us and so he sent Jesus his own Son to do that.

God put our sins, your sins and my sin on Jesus and he poured out his wrath on his son, when Jesus died a horrible death of suffering and pain on the cross at Calvary.

Jesus God’s own Son, who was guilty of none of the spiritual atrocities outlined earlier, was born sinless but he was crucified with our sins placed upon him.

When Jesus died for our sins, this death served as a payment for every person who earned the ultimate expression of God’s wraith which is eternal damnation and loss to a hell of eternal suffering and fire.

When Jesus died for us HIS DEATH satisfied the wrath of God and so now rather than experiencing the out pouring of God’s punishment, we can by placing our faith in Jesus Christ as LORD of our lives, be saved and forgiven and cleansed.

  • Look at the truth of how humanity has earned the wrath of God and the evidence of that wrath in the world today and see it in it’s full and unvarnished ugliness.
  • Look at your own sin if you are unsaved here today and be honest about the truth of what you’ve earned from God.

Romans 6:23 tells us that the wages of SIN is death., humanity earned it and deserved it

Romans 5:23 tells us that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God; this is a HORRIBLE reality that speaks to the weakness that is all of us, no goodness is in any of us, on any level.

But Oh How I love Romans 5:8 that tells us that while we were YET sinners Christ died for us

Yes this is a terrible and fallen world. Yes you are in danger of being lost, but the good news is that you don’t have to be lost with the world.

You can make a decision to come out from under the wrath of God and to find peace with God through Jesus Christ.

Today you can do that. You have a choice, to live as an independent sinner and die under HIS wrath and be lost eternally to HELL, or to accept salvation through Jesus Christ God’s own SON who paid the penalty that you deserved.

The penalty has been paid by Christ and you can accept what he did and give your life to Jesus, or you can pay the penalty of your sins yourself.

YOU HAVE A CHOICE…LIFE and PEACE or judgment and eternal damnation.
