What the Spirit does Pt 5

7/23/17 sermon by Rev. Julius A. Harper, Senior Pastor Santa Clarita Christian Fellowship

What the Spirit does Lesson 5

The Spirit gives us power to mortify evils deeds

Romans 8:12-13 (NLT)
12  Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do.
13  For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live.

Romans 8:12-13 (NKJV)
12  Therefore, brethren, we are debtors–not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.
13  For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

May the Lord add a blessing to the reading and the hearing of HIS holy and mighty word.

This is sermon # 5 in our mini-series within the series of teachings we are walking through from the Epistle written to the church at ROME. In our last sermon, we spoke about how the Spirit gives life to the believer. There were three points in that sermon and I’ll just give you a quick review.

In point # 1 we spoke about how a person is revived spiritually at the time of conversion; before we came to Christ says Ephesians 2:1 we were dead in our trespasses and sins.

This is the state that we were born into because of our father Adam, the first living person. Through one man, Sin entered into the world and the human race: but through Christ, the second Adam, we became, because of Christ who is a life giving Spirit; revived.

If you are a child of God Christ, there is a Spiritual difference between you and the unsaved person.

You may look like him physically, but spiritually you are different because a transformation has occurred in which you who were formerly dead in trespasses and sins, have been made alive by the Spirit.

We spoke secondly about how the Spirit enables a man to live a righteous and Godly life; you as a believer are free from sin, we are no longer controlled by the old sinful nature and we can now flow in that reality as we embrace and submit to the Spirit of God and we will talk more about that today.

Third and finally we looked at the incredible issue of the quickening of our mortal bodies. The scripture said in Romans 8:11 (KJV) But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you”

The same power that raised Jesus up from the dead; the Spirit of Christ himself, if that Spirit dwells in you, a transformation will take place when Jesus returns, in which our mortal bodies will be changed in an instant in the twinkling of and eye, and we will be changed from mortal to immortal beings who have bodies just like Jesus.

Today we are diving deeper into a sermon, that on many points sounds duplicative to last week’s sermon, but it is different because of the practicality of what we will share today.

Here Paul in these short verses is speaking to us of the power to Mortify or put to death the evil deeds in your life.

The word Mortify means to subdue, to suppress, to subjugate, chasten or control.

Now this word is very important that Paul is using because for me it speaks to a level of realty, that I often struggle with when Paul is speaking in absolutes.

I understand and believe and embrace the truth that this is what God’s word says and the fact this it’s DONE.

But day-to day and moment by moment I still have to deal with the fact that I have not yet reached that reality in it’s fullness.

The mortification process, which I have learned about in this study allows me to bridge the gap between where I am (in terms of the struggle of working daily to embrace the realization of my position in Christ ) and the development of that reality coming into focus in real time.

I’ve been free and I’ve been delivered, but through the mortification process I am seeing what has already been done, coming into real time.

This is the teaching that is going to bless all of us here today, if you understand that say AMEN

So today, we want to learn more about that in these three points of the sermon, that teach us, what the Spirit does in the life of the believer, specifically dealing with the deeds of the flesh.

The Spirit gives power to the believer and enables him to mortify the deeds of the flesh by….

  1. Releasing him from the obligations of the flesh.

Romans 8:12 (NLT)
12  Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do.

Romans 6:12 (NKJV)
12  Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts.

1 Corinthians 7:23a (NKJV)
23  You were bought at a price;

Romans 7:23-24 (KJV)
23  But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
24  O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

To begin our discussion we are using the New Living Translation here, because it uses the word OBLIGATION; the King James version is built more on the idea of debt and we will explore more about that in point number 2

The Spirit of Christ, which lives in you as a believer gives the believer the ability to control or subdue or suppress, the urges that Paul identified as being a source of war within his body.

I like this particular translation because of how the word obligation fits so wonderfully with how the flesh often responds to the pull and appeal of sin.

You see the FLESH will tell you…OH man you got to do this.

This is why you will hear a person say I couldn’t help my self; I just found myself drawn to it and I had to look, I had to touch it, I had to taste it, I just felt like I was going to explode if I didn’t do it; this is the state of mind and the state of reality, that the unsaved person exist in all of the time and it is those urges that drive and direct every aspect of his or her life.

A sense of obligation to do what the sinful nature urges a person to do, should not define the life of a child of God.

Believers must embrace mentally and emotionally, as an over riding truth which counters the lie of the flesh that you are obligated; the power of the Spirit of Christ which dwells in you and the work of Christ on the cross who purchased you with HIS blood, says no you are NOT obligated.

You don’t just have to do it.

It is a lie that you have got to go along with and submit too and roll over to that thing.

It is a lie that you have and give up and submit to the sinful choice that is before you.

It is a lie that you cannot resist and you are a victim.

Just because it still catches your attention, does not mean that it has to RULE you.

Just because you can still smell a cake if you walk down the street and cross where the bakery is located, that fact that you still have a nose doesn’t mean that you have an obligation, to do what the fleshly nature urges.

Believers are not obligated to the flesh……. for the flesh.

You and I as believers do not owe the sinful nature anything; and the bible says if we live after the FLESH Romans 8:13 says we shall die.

To be carnally minded is death; if we sow to the flesh, we shall reap corruption; it is a lie from the pit of hell itself, to believe that just because the sinful nature feels it, that it means that we must obey it.

Thought:

When the Spirit of God came into our lives, our obligation to give in to the pull of our sinful nature was broken.

And if you have the Spirit of God living in you, he will remind you of that.

So Romans 6:12 declares that we as believers who are bought and paid for by God himself, should not let sin reign in our mortal bodies that we should obey the lust thereof.

Just because you smell the cake as you pass the bakery; doesn’t mean that you are obligated to go in a take a bite.

There is a war in your members YES, but the Sprit of God says you don’t owe the flesh anything.

Everything that the flesh offers you is worthless.

The fleshly mind cannot please God.

The things of the flesh tend towards that which does not bring life and peace but instead brings death and destruction.

So when you encounter the urge, you must counter that urge with the truth of the word of God, which declares that you child of God I don’t owe your flesh anything.

There is nothing good in pursuing the desires of the flesh.

The shinny or eye catching piece of candy which appeals to the eyes and the pride of life; the things of the world, may attract your attention, but the child of God must embrace resistance and the Spirit’s guidance towards a way of escape; for all that is in the world, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life; the sense of I just can’t help myself…..is NOT true but rather my saved friend….. it is a lie

The Spirit gives power to the believer and enables him to mortify the deeds of the flesh by…

  1. Realigning our “debt” from that of the flesh to that of the Spirit.

Romans 8:12a (NKJV)
12  Therefore, brethren, we are debtors –not to the flesh

Romans 8:12 (NIV)

Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation–but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it.

Romans 6:18 (NKJV)
18  And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.

2 Corinthians 5:17 (NLT)
17  This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

Here in the second point, we note in the differing translations of the passage, the word DEBT or Debtors; Paul says that we as believers are debtors, but NOT debtors to the flesh.

Now watch this and make sure that we all stay on point.

We as believers are NOT debtors to the FLESH, but we are still debtors none-the less; watch this…DEBTORS to the Spirit.

When we received Christ Jesus into our lives as Lord, our Debt status shifted from that of a person who is indebted to sin and the flesh to that of a person who is indebted to the Spirit.

Now again in earlier teachings Paul has talked to us, using different phrases and words to communicate this same over-arching theme.

When we were without Christ, we were slaves or bondservants to sin; we were held captives, we were obligated and enslaved.

When we came into Christ, we became his servants, we became his bondservant, and we were bought and paid for with a price.

With the presence and Power of the living God now living within us, we were born again, we became new creatures; the old life was ended, the new life began and we became NEW creatures in Christ.

And with that newness, came a realigning of our “indebtedness”

Thought:

Child of God you and I as God’s beloved are now in debt to the Spirit.

This is not a negative thing but it is a positive thing that ought to be celebrated and embraced as a blessing.

Think about how things were in the flesh and contrast that reality with the blessedness of life in the Spirit.

In the flesh, there was confusion and chaos.

In the flesh, there was a lack of purpose and focus; you were driven entirely by what you lusted after and what ever appealed to your senses.

For some of you , truth be told that your mind was jacked up.

The way you thought was always contrary.

You were at enmity with God.

If you sowed to the flesh, all you would reap was nothing but corruption.

But look at the blessings that flow from the Spirit of God and celebrate what you are now indebted to.

The Spirit gives you clarity of purpose

You know who you are and to whom you belong.

The Spirit pulls YOU in the direction of good things, it changes your internal value system and the way you think and process.

The mess that use to appeal to you, no longer has any brightness to it.

You didn’t just get old, the way your mind works is different, because the Spirit has cleared up that fog and confusion, that used to characterize the way you thought and processed reality.

I don’t have to tell you, but maybe I need to remind you of how jacked up you where before the Spirit of God came to fix your mind.

When you look back at some of the decisions you and made, it’s unbelievable when you look back at the amazing transformation that God has wrought in your through HIS Spirit.

That is an incredible blessing that flows out of our re-alignment.

Think about how the Spirit speaks to you.

Think about how he brings scriptures into your mind that you didn’t even know that you remembered and the Spirit of God will do that right at the time when you need them….things will pop up and you’ll be surprise…saying WOW where did that come from.

The Spirit will speak to our heart.

He’ll teach and you guide you into God’s perfect will.

He’ll give you a peace that passes all understanding and guards your heart and mind.

He’ll show you how to escape, when the devil temps you, because the Spirit works in concert with God’s purpose and plan for your life.

We are indebted to the Spirit of God, who does and will do and is doing so very much for us.

The Spirit gives power to the believer and enables him to mortify the deeds of the flesh third and finally by…

  1. Empowering the believer to (with the help of the Spirit) chart his or her own course.

Romans 8:13-14 (KJV)
13  For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
14  For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

Romans 6:23 (NKJV)
23  For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:13 (NKJV)
13  For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

For this third and final point, I want you to write this single over-arching statement down in your notes and highlight it ….Here it is

….The Spirit gives the believer the power to make choices….

You remember in point number one, the picture that I painted for you of the hapless and helpless person who is just driven by his urges in life.

This is what it is like to live as unsaved person who is controlled by the flesh.

The person who does not know Jesus as Lord, functions more like a helpless child who is just propelled along by evil opportunities and the temptations that are part of life in this world.

Now again I am not saying this as a put down; I am speaking to you as someone who knows what this reality is like, because I lived in this world as an unsaved person: I was not born in the church, I was out there just like you.

Like you, I thought I was in charge but I was chump.

You were a chump too, a rudderless ships sailing along through life on a path straight to a Devils’ Hell.

It’s tough, but it is true. We didn’t see ourselves that way before we came to Christ, but that was our reality.

But when the Spirit of God came into our lives a changed occurred.

Now the Spirit empowers and the helps the believer to chart their own course, instead of having to live like a rudderless ship that is just blown along.

The word says that those who live after the FLESH shall die and the truth is that without the Spirit of God living on the inside of you there is no way that you WIN.

Without the Spirit of God, to direct you towards the choices, which mean life, you will naturally remain a victim of sin and earn the wages thereof, which is death.

But the Spirit gives power to the believer and it takes him from being a CHUMP without POWER to being a Champion who can overcome, by the power of the SPIRIT.

Child of God this is who you are IN CHRIST; this was and is a feature of the blessed position you obtained when you were placed in Christ at the time of conversion.

There was a joining in which God “tabernacled” in you.

And because of that, you as a child of God now have the power (with the help of the Spirit) to chart your course and to choose life.

I understand that the challenges will still be there, but I want to assure you that you are able to subdue the evil deeds.

You are not a victim.

You are not a hapless chump, who is always a hair’s breath away from death and destruction.

NO you are more than a conqueror.

You are the HEAD and not the tail.

You are a born again, Spirit filled, bought and paid for child of God who has been given the POWER to subdue.

The power to suppress.

The power to subjugate.

The power to chasten your FLESH and to control this body.

And ultimately as the scripture declares YOU CAN do all things through Christ who will strengthen to you by HIS spirit AND it is HE who will give you the POWER to frustrate and the plans of the evil one.

Child of God embrace these words as faith building mechanism in your life, for my God has said, that no weapon formed against you shall prosper and every tongue that accuses you in judgment, you shall condemn.

In spite of the evil that advances on every side, Jude chapter 1 verse 24 declares that he is able to keep you from falling and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with great JOY.

“You have no obligation” you are not in debt to the sinful nature and it’s urges, but you’ve been freed to live for the Christ who loves and choose you as his.

Come on and give God some Praise…

CLOSE:

Today on this wonderful Sunday morning, we celebrated the blessed position that the child of God has by reason of the indwelling presence of the Spirit.

I am aware today however even as we celebrate and praise God for this blessing, that these words may not apply to every person under the sound of my voice.

To those of you here today, I want to take you back to that picture of a rudderless ship I spoke about earlier.

The feeling of being a victim, of being powerless.

That feeling of being powerless and lost is real; but what is even more frightening is the reality of were your life is headed.

Right now you are outside of God’s family without the resources and provision and protection that only comes through Christ.

Life is tough my friend. I know it. And if you don’t make a decision for Christ today, it will only get worse and then you’ll die and be lost eternally in a Devils hell without any hope.

Seeing you lost and left in the cold is not God’s desire, but he’ll leave you right in the mess you are in because he doesn’t take away your choice.

You’ve got to choose him. You’ve got to choose to believe in the death burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ God’s own son.

John 3:16 said that God so loved the world that he gave in ONLY begotten SON, that whoever believes in his should not perish but have ever lasting life.

You can live like you are living right now, taking your chances and relying on yourself or you can come to Christ by faith and become a born again child of God today.

While all eyes are closed and heads are bowed.

What the Spirit does Pt 4

Sermon by Rev. Julius A. Harper, Senior Pastor Santa Clarita Christian Fellowship

The Spirit gives life to the believer

Romans 8:10-11 (NKJV)
10  And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
11  But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

Romans 8:10-11 (NLT)
10  And Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you life because you have been made right with God.
11  The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.

May the Lord add a blessing to the reading and the hearing of HIS holy and mighty word.

In our last sermon, we looked at and studied the word of God and the writings of Paul concerning the indwelling presence of the Spirit; and we touched upon a couple of operationally relevant topics that addressed the practical nature of the push-pull realties of walking in and living the Christian life.

You and I are very complex beings and there are spiritual forces that are pressing against us on both sides; a war if please in which the mind and the body are warring against the Spirit and God’s vision and plan for you.

When you were saved and again if you don’t know Jesus Christ as Lord of your life, this does not apply to you; the Spirit of God took up residence in your life; you became a sanctuary and a dwelling place for the Spirit of God, who not only came to live in your life, but to began making changes in your personage so that you would begin to walk like and think like and live like the child of God that you were called to be.

We learned how serious of an issue this is to almighty God, so much so that 1st Corinthians 3:16 to 17 declared that God will destroy anyone who destroys his temple and ye are that temple.

The presence of God within the life of a believer is a shared union and a mutual indwelling between God, Christ and the believer; this is a mind-blowing Spiritual reality and hard to explain in the incredibleness of it; the fact that the Spirit of God bring us into a union. We are in-Christ, Christ is in us and we are in God in Christ.

We also learned that the power of the Spirit evidences itself by becoming the driving force in the life of the believer; the Spirit powers and directs us, so that we are able to live spiritually in this earthly body and that happens by the same power that raised up Jesus from the dead.

AMEN.

Now today we are going to talk about how the Spirit gives life to the spirit of the believer and this is very important to understand because the body of a person is going to die, but our Spirits because we are in-Christ can live forever.

Three points will comprise today’s sermon and then we will finish.

The Sprit of Christ gives life to the Spirit of man by….

  1. Reviving a man spiritually at the time of conversion.

Romans 8:10-11 (NLT)
10  And Christ lives within you..

Colossians 2:13 (NLT)
13  You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins.

1 Corinthians 15:45 (NLT)
45  The Scriptures tell us, “The first man, Adam, became a living person.” But the last Adam—that is, Christ—is a life-giving Spirit.

Ephesians 2:1 (NKJV)
1  And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins,

Here in our examination of the word of God we begin the first point by directing our attention to the words “and Christ lives within you.

The New King James says If Christ be in you..

If you are a born again child of God if Christ be in you” there is a Spiritual difference between you and the unsaved person.

There is a difference not because you are better than the unsaved person, not because you are smarter, not because you have earned God’s approval but because of what happened to you when you accepted Jesus Christ as Lord of your life, at the moment of conversion.

If the Spirit of God is in you, you my friend have been revived and of course reviving something is not necessary unless it is DEAD.

Now we read together a moment ago from Ephesians chapter 2:1, which said

that “before we were converted “we were dead”

Now obviously the passage cannot be speaking about your physical status; obviously you were breathing and living and walking here on planet earth, you were alive physically, but Spiritually you were dead before you came into the family of born again believers.

Thought:

Now some folks here may have a hard time wrapping their minds around this and in fact need a bit more explanation.

How can a person be dead, how can a person who walks and talks and breathes and lives be considered DEAD.

Well I am very glad that you asked that question, because it all begins with ADAM.

Some one may have told you a lie and filled your mind with a bunch of foolishness about you having evolved from the APES.

But the preacher is here to tell you the truth about ADAM.
Adam was created being who was created by God.

God made man by forming him from the dust of the earth and he breathed the breath of life into him and man became a living soul.

1st Corinthians spoke to us about this ADAM.

Adam is the father of all mankind and it doesn’t matter what color you are or what language you speak or what part of the world you came from; we are all sons and daughters of Adam.

Now for those who don’t know much about Adam, let me just go right to the core issue of why his name is important for you to understand within the context of this first point and how it relates to the reality of your spiritual death.

You see Adam didn’t start of being a living dead man; but he became dead.

God had created Adam as a living Spirit and equipped him with all kinds of blessings, which included life eternal here on planet earth.

Adam was given the freedom to rule this earth and subdue it under his authority in partnership with God Almighty, with one provision.

God said you got free run of the place, but don’t eat of this one tree because in the day that you eat of this tree, you shall surely die.

Adam would eventually go on to take of the forbidden fruit and on that day, he didn’t die physically, but he died spiritually and eventually his body would die as well.

And because of that one SIN every man, women, boy and girl, was born dead and infected with a sinful nature.

As believers before you were converted you too were dead because of your sins and because you’re sinful nature was not yet cut away.

But on the day you were converted, God made you alive with Christ, because he forgave all our sins.

The Scriptures tell us, “The first man, Adam, became a living person.” But the last Adam—that is, Christ—is a life-giving Spirit.

Thought:

This is the wonder and beauty of what the Spirit does; when Christ comes into your heart, Jesus enters into your life and coverts or transforms the Spirit of man from death to life.

He cuts away the sinful nature. So says Colossians 2:13

He effects a transaction whereby you become forgiven of all your sins, because you are now in the beloved.

God then makes you alive in Christ, the very people who were DEAD in their trespasses and sins, says Ephesians 2:1.

Thought:

Now this wonderful reality ONLY applies to the born again child of God, who has come into the blessedness of a relationship with Jesus Christ as Lord, through Faith.

I say that today, because I believe that there are people who are listening to this sermon, who are Spiritually dead.

And I am not sharing this as a put down, but rather I am pivoting for a moment to speak directly to you before we go deeper into the teaching, because we care about you.

  • You see the condition of Spiritual deadness is not something that cannot be changed by God.
  • The condition of Spiritual deadness does not have to define who you are.

And we know that, I know that, the person next to you knows that, because we use to be in the same position that you are in.

We were outside of the family of God just like you: but I am here today to tell you that too can be transformed by the Spirit of God, coming into your life right where you are in the moment of the twinkling of an eye.

God himself is in the exact same business that he’s always been in and that is saving folks from a devils hell by drawing them to Christ Jesus his only begotten Son and stirring in your heart a faith in Jesus, that will open the door to your salvation.

If you are willing to cry out to him, if you are willing to declare with your mouth and believe in your heart that God has raised Jesus Christ from the dead, you my friend can have Christ in you and with his presence, that dead Spirit will be revived to life…but this only happens if Christ is in you.

The Sprit of Christ gives life to the Spirit of man by….

  1. Enabling a man to live a righteous and Godly life.

Romans 8:10b-c (NKJV)
10  the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness

Romans 6:18 (NLT)
18  Now you are free from your slavery to sin, and you have become slaves to righteous living.

Romans 8:9 (NLT)
9  But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.)

James 1:14-15 (NLT)
14  Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away.
15  These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death.

Here in this second point we are speaking of the Spirit’s enablement, or empowerment in the life of a believer as it regards righteousness.

We looked at this when we were in our studies through the epistle to the church at Rome in chapter 6, where we compared and contrasted the unsaved-dead life if you please, which was under a state of servitude; our bodies were yielded as instruments of unrighteousness, we were servants of sin, before we came to life in the Spirit through Christ.

The body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

The spirit of the man who was dead in his trespasses and sins is now empowered to live a life that reflects the spirit of God in righteousness.

Thought:

Now for this second point, I pulled together three confirming scriptures, which will form the basis of want we need to communicate here.

The first is this. Christ and his indwelling presence has made the believer free.

Christ has made the child of God free from the previous state of slavery to sin, in which we lived before our conversion and with that transformative work if you please, the power to flow in the freedom of living righteously, has been granted to the believer, but it is up to the believer to embrace and flow in that reality and to pursue it daily.

Now you are free says Romans 6:18 Now you are free from your slavery to sin, and you have become slaves to righteous living.

2nd thought.

Now the question arises and it is a valid one, so let me ask verbalize it for those who are thinking and processing what I am sharing.

Here is the question….

If we have the Spirit of God, who enables us to live righteously, why the struggle ?

Why are so many people who name the name of Jesus struggling with sort sin why are people who say that love God, in fact are living like sinners ?

What is the problem ?

You said that the word tells us that the Spirit enables a person to lives righteously.

What then is the problem, why is there a disconnect, why are Christian living lives where sin is allowed to grow, leading not to a life of freedom but to a life that resembles a person who is spiritually dead and bound in their trespasses and sins.

Wow, those of huge questions, so let’s process this if we can.

Firstly…let’s be clear about this. No believer is perfect; flowing in the freedom, pursuing righteousness does not mean that you have obtained perfection YET.

The reality is that every child of God is engaged in a daily battle in which there must be an on-going crucifying of the flesh.

Let’s be clear, struggling and being involved in the war, does not mean that you are not committed to righteous living or that you are not functioning in the power that Christ has blessed with you with.

You are fighting and warring and crucifying this old flesh, because you are committed to the work of the Spirit of God in your life.

If on the other hand a person NAMES the NAME of CHRIST and says YES I am a believer, yet the reality of his or her life, is not a partnering in the battle or a pursuing of righteousness, but rather it is total and unbridled capitulation to SIN, then the question becomes a frightening one for sure.

And that question revolves around the reality, that you may not have the Spirit of God living in you at all.

Yes there are a lot of folk who name the name of Jesus and it’s all talk.

My friend is it possible that you do not belong to him?

Is it possible that you do not have that Spirit of God?

Is it possible that you are still dead in your trespasses and sins, because your confession was only with your lips and you never accepted Jesus Christ into your heart as Lord and fully surrendered to him?

Thought:

I know that this line of questioning isn’t very uplifting but there is a danger in not facing or asking the tough questions.

There is a DANGER that is found in the pews and comfy seats of churches to today, people who live dual lives, controlled not by the Sprit of God, but instead wrapped up in a nice suit or attractive dress that seems to be just right for the church, but living lives that in no way reflect the presence of the Spirit of God, evidencing itself in the power he gives to the child of God to pursue a life of righteousness.

Living the righteous life, flowing in the reality of walking with him day-by day and working out your soul salvation in fear and trembling is not even on your radar.

Now if you are watching me on line, don’t change the channel.

No one can tell what kind of turmoil is going on in the inside of you.

No one can tell that beneath the nicely polished exterior that you are controlled by drugs and alcohol or a terrible sex fetish.

When the Spirit of God is alive in you he makes a difference.

He causes problems. He speaks to you when something is tempting you to go in the wrong direction and he makes you uncomfortable with playing around with sin.

He messes up comfort zone, which is why you can’t run and jump and get zonked at the club bumping and grinding with some fool.

You can’t feel happy with playing around with SIN because he troubles you and he deals with you HE troubles you because you are HIS and your body belong to him.

If the Spirit evidences no influence or control in your life and you can sleep while living a sinful life, something is wrong.

You need to go back, you need to get on your knees; you need to come to the point of complete surrender and repentance and ask God to turn your life upside down and inside out; so that you can be troubled not by the words of the preacher who may have offended you, but by the Spirit of God who wants to live in you and remake you into the image of Christ.

The Sprit of Christ gives life to the Spirit of man, third and finally by….

  1. Quickening the mortal body on the great day of redemption.

Romans 8:11 (NKJV)
11  But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

Romans 8:11 (KJV)
11  But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

1 Corinthians 15:52-54 (NLT)
52  It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For when the trumpet sounds, those who have died will be raised to live forever. And we who are living will also be transformed.

53  For our dying bodies must be transformed into bodies that will never die; our mortal bodies must be transformed into immortal bodies.
54  Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies that will never die, this Scripture will be fulfilled: “Death is swallowed up in victory.

The Spirit of God will give life to those in whom the Spirit dwells, this is our great hope and our most longed for reality, that is promised to us on that great day when Christ shall appear to take us home.

I like the wording of the traditional King James Version which used the word “quicken”.

This is a word which means to make alive, to give life, to cause life or to renew or make new.

The Spirit of God gives life to that which formerly struggled with the pains and pulls of the flesh, by totally reengineering all of the elements of this old body that causes us so much trouble.

This mouth that that constantly causes you problems will be remade.

These hands that often find their way to mischief in spite of your best efforts will be remade.

The eyes that plagued you all of your natural life will be remade.

The mind that was drawn towards filth and self-indulgence.

That mind that was depressed and down trodden over the stress and struggles in life.

That old body, that struggled with sin will be remade and given a new life.

The energy of the new body will no longer be attached to mortality, but instead; this mortal is going to put on immortality.

That means that time and space will no longer have any effect on we who are filled with the Spirit of God.

That means that all of the elements of the new body, will be arranged and set up in such a way, that it’s fit for the eternal realm with God himself.

And the power that will do all this, is the SPIRIT OF CHRIST HIMSELF

  • The same power that raised up a dead Jesus.
  • The same power that came back into the body of the Lord who hung on the cross.
  • The same power that enabled Jesus to walk through walls and appear in a room full of disciples when the door was closed.
  • That same Spirit that came into your life when you opened your heart to Jesus as Lord.
  • That same Spirit of Christ himself that also lives in you; will quicken your mortal body and you’ll be changed to have a body just like Jesus

It will happen in a MOMENT on that great day, but only if HIS spirit is living in you.

CLOSE:

If you don’t know Jesus as Lord, my friend listen closely to what I am sharing.

If you are here under the sound of my voice and hear the Spirit speaking to you through this word.

Harden not your heart.

Don’t let it be said to late.

Don’t resist the Spirit’s pull upon your heart my friend but recognize, that unique and special occasion in which the Spirit of God is calling you to HIS son.

If you are not saved. You don’t have the Spirit and thus if you died tonight in the filthiness of your sins and in an unforgiven state, you are LOST.

It doesn’t have to be that way. Salvation is a free gift obtained by turning your life in faith to JESUS Christ.

And today you can do that, by placing your faith in Jesus as LORD

What the Spirit does Pt 3

What The Spirit Does Part 3

The indwelling presence of the Spirit

Romans 8:8-9 (NKJV)
8  So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
9  But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.

May the Lord add a blessing to the reading and the hearing of HIS holy word.

In our last sermon, we continued with an extended examination of Paul’s teaching on the subject of the Spirit, more specifically how the Spirit operates in the realm of the mind.

You and I are very complex creatures; who are comprised of our MIND our body and our Spirit.

The Spirit of God, who becomes resident in the life of a believer, has a tremendous task to accomplish in your life, that starts from the very moment in which you are placed into Christ.

The Holy Spirit takes residence within you at the point of conversion and He immediately begins to work the work of God by influencing you toward the goal of remaking you into the image of Christ, so that your walk or your physical life would reflect the reality of who you are in-Christ positionally.

God saves you, seals you and designates you as being his in the life of HIS Son and he sends his Spirit into your life, not only as a seal, but also as an agent of his work and purpose in your life.

The Spirit operates in mind of the believer, specifically seeking to influence us in the battle with the carnal mind.

Galatians 5:17a-d (NLT) says 17 a The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other d

In the life of every believer in Christ, there is a battle that is going on between the carnal mind and the Spiritual mind.

We also learned that the Spirit operates in mind of the believer, specifically seeking to influence us in the development of the renewed mind.

Romans 8:6 (NKJV) says 6  For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Colossians 3:10 (NKJV) said that we
10  have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him

The Spirit operates in mind of the believer, specifically seeking to influence us to be Spiritually minded.

Therefore we must keep our minds focused on rejecting every thought that presents itself as a challenge to God.

We must keep our minds focused on knowing and believing God’s word and imbibing God’s word.

Now I encourage you to pick up that sermon on-line and you can do so on our YOU-TUBE channel to get the entire teaching

AMEN.

Today we are going to examine the power of the Spirit and what the Sprit does in the life of the believer in Jesus Christ, specifically focusing on the indwelling presence of the Spirit in the believer and what that means.

Now in previous sermons we’ve talked about the indwelling presence of the Spirit but now we are going to drill down deeper into the subject looking at how the Spirit evidences itself in the believer as noted in these 4 points.

If you are ready say AMEN.

The power of the Spirit evidences itself in the believer by……

  1. Taking up residence in the believer.

Romans 8:9c (NKJV)

9c  But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you

John 14:17c (NLT)
17  He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.

1 Corinthians 3:16b (YLT)
16  have ye not known that ye are a sanctuary of God, and the Spirit of God doth dwell in you?

1 Corinthians 3:9b (NLT)
9  For we are both God’s workers. And you are God’s field. You are God’s building.

The Spirit of God evidences itself in the life of the believer by dwelling or taking up residence in your life.

The word used here for dwell is translated from the word OIK-eo which communicates the idea, that one lives in a home.

The Spirit of God literally moves in and sets up house in you.

He exist there, he abides there, he lodges, he is not just there for a quick visit, but rather he is there to LIVE and to abide and to reside and to remain.

Thought:

Now a resident is different that a visitor. He is not migratory, or transient, but rather he is there to exist habitually and as an occupant and he is invested with rights and responsibilities that accompany the reality of his habitation.

John 14 said that the Spirit “leads us into all truth; This is an important and distinctive manifestation of God’s power and Spirit, as evidenced in the life of the child of God.

The Spirit of truth is the Spirit of God, at work in the life of him in whom he dwells, working at purposes which are directly related to God’s plan to fill the life of the believer with truth and goodness.

The spirit of God leads you and directs you.

The Spirit of God speaks what is in the heart of God and in the mind of God, showing us the way to please God and live in accordance with his plan and will.

His presence is one of a perpetual nature and one that finds it’s right to live and remain within the fact that you’ve been secured and bought with a price.

Thought:

My wife and I live in our home and we conduct ourselves as though it belongs to us, because we purchased it.

We didn’t lease it, we didn’t AIR-B-N-B-it, we bought it

We turn on the lights when we want, we add furniture to it when we want, we paint it inside the way we want, have rights to be there and we have a right reside there because we bought it.

In that same way the Spirit within you DWELLS, not as a guest that you may disinvite when you no longer want to have around, but rather he dwells in you with the understanding that you are God’s building, because God bought you and paid for you with the blood of his precious Son.

Thought:

This is something of course that we need to recognize and embrace even as we struggle with our fleshly rebellion, which at various times will raise its ugly head.

Very often we are happy and appreciative for the Spirit to be there in us, until those times when he becomes an unwelcome guest, because he is cramping our style or troubling our minds, by reminding us, or convicting us with some unwanted thoughts.

And truth be told that the flesh wants to say HOLY SPIRIT you are just visiting, but that is not the reality, he’s there doing his JOB and fulfilling his assignment as a permanent resident in your life.

The power of the Spirit evidences itself in the believer……

  1. By creating a shared presence within the believer.

John 14:20,23(NKJV)
20  At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.
23  Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.

1 Corinthians 3:16-17 (NLT)
16  Don’t you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you?
17  God will destroy anyone who destroys this temple. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.

1 Corinthians 3:16-17 (KJV)
16  Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
17  If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

The shared presence of God within the life of a believer is a shared union and a mutual indwelling between God, Christ and the believer; this is a mind-blowing Spiritual reality and hard to explain in the incredibleness of it; the fact that the Spirit of God bring us into a union. We are in-Christ, Christ is in us and we are in God in Christ.

Thought:

Now the focus here in this point is about the presence of God. With the Spirit of God comes his “presence” say that term presence.

Now this may seem like we are talking about the same thing that was addressed in point number one, but here we are talking about his PRESENCE in US and ours in HIM.

1st Corinthians speaks of the temple of God. When I researched this scripture, I found that sometimes this is used to speak of the church, but I also see that the scriptures speaks of the individual, where it says you or ye are that temple.

Now looking at the picture of the temple is very instructive, for the temple of God describes a building, which a house, but the temple is a house that has a specific and holy purpose.

There are two Greek words for temple. One of those words is NAOS which refers to a sanctuary or shrine.

Thought:

The temple of God, which is your body, is a sanctuary for God’s presence.

Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep My word; and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.

When God accepted you believer, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, made you into a sanctuary for God’s presence.

In the context of 1st Corinthians, the church members were being warned of the severe consequences that would accrue to those who defiled the sanctuary.

Contextually we know that there was a lot of mischief going on in the Corinthian church and because of that Paul would write to them so that they would understand just how serious God is about the sanctity of his sanctuary.

Those church folk needed to learn to fear and respect the spiritual reality of who they were in Christ and who Christ was in them and I believe that we need to learn that same lesson in the church today.

We need to YES celebrate the wonder of this Spiritual reality, but we also need to develop some Godly fear.

Thought:

God doesn’t play when it comes to the issue of defiling his sanctuary.

Defile is a very powerful word which means to desecrate, to pollute to taint or sully, the word is taken from an old French term : de-fouler which means to trample on or to violate.

The word destroy is also a very powerful word, which means to demolish, to annihilate and this is the word that the scripture uses to describe the response of God to any and all that defile or violate the place of his presence.

Now this is going to rock some of your worlds here today, because you need to think about this.

  • You need to think about some of the sinful activities that are often permitted in the lives of believers.

You need to think about the relationships that you are engaged in and the activities associated therewith.

You need to think about the reality of some of the edgy you allowed and are allowing to-be a part of your life.

  • And you need to be careful not to cross the line into anything that defiles God’s temple.

The presence of God as an indwelling reality in the life of the believer is a mind blowing blessed reality, which speaks of God’s incredible union with us, but it also warns us to never ever count his presence as a thing we can disregard and disrespect without consequence.

The power of the Spirit evidences itself in the believer……

  1. By transferring the believer into a different state of being.

Romans 8:9a (NKJV)

9  But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you

1 Corinthians 12:13 (KJV)
13  For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

John 14:20 (NKJV)
20  At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.

We’ve talked and taught in earlier sermons within this series, about the concept of positioning.

SAY THAT WORD…POSITIOINING

In the Spiritual sense the word positioning is best understood and embraced as having a meaning which is related to the standing or status or condition of a person in the eyes of God.

In an earlier sermon we looked at what happens to us Spiritually when we are accepted into the beloved, we are baptized, we are buried with him, and we are identified as being in Christ and a part of Christ.

1st Corinthians said that by one Spirit we were baptized into one body; we’ve been made to drink into one Spirit.

The believer who has accepted Jesus Christ by faith as Lord of their lives in God’s eyes is no longer positioned in the flesh, but instead he has been translated into becoming a new being, who’s life and home are no longer in the flesh but in the Spirit.

Now this is a reality if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you.

The Word Search verse-by-verse commentary of Romans says and I quote“ The Spirit becomes a new element in which the believer lives, like water to the fish (is his natural element) or a bird to the air (is his natural element) the believer now lives as one who resides in the Spirit.

Thought:

Life in the Spirit is our new element.

If it were possible for a fish to be taken out of the water and changed in such a way, that the water is no longer his element, but instead air is his element, that fish would be changed in terms of the home in which he is most comfortably suited, he would be changed to inhabit a new element.

This is what has happened to the born again child of God. We have been changed by the Spirit of God who lives in us as we live in him.

Life in the Spirit is our new element because we have been translated and positioned by God himself into a different state of being spiritually.

Thought:

Think about this reality in terms of what happens when we are justified by God.

God takes us from being in the flesh and under the requirements of the law and he justifies us and makes us acceptable to him not by works but because of faith.

Life in the Spirit is now your new element.

Paul understood that his Spiritual position and his Spiritual status, was a life he embraced and walked in Spiritually, because Christ lived in him and had taken him out of one sphere and into another.

He was still in this flesh physically, but the life he lived was a Spiritual life, in Christ as HIS new element.

Thought:

Our new element is in the Spirit; YOUR NEW ELEMENT IS IN THE SPIRIT; like a fish who no longer likes the water, we are not comfortable in the world, we are at home and comfortable with the things of the Spirit.

THOUGHT:

Now, I can hear someone saying, Aw come on preacher; I’m not really feeling it, because even though I know that I’ve been saved and have been translated into a new element; it still feels like I am living in the FLESH, because FLESH pulls at me constantly and it is always on me day and night

To such a one I would say…..I get it…..I feel you..

The flesh is going to be there pulling at you, telling you NO your not in the spirit…you are about “X”

Your members don’t want to walk in the Spirit, so you engage your MIND by embracing and resisting the pull of the flesh, day-by-day-by day, crucifying the flesh daily, resting the forces of this word, which are seeking to make you conform; but you resist, by renewing your mind and filling your mind daily with the word of God

The power of the Spirit evidences itself 4th and finally…

  1. By becoming the driving force in the life of the believer….

Romans 8:9b (NKJV)
9  But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.

Galatians 2:20 (NLT)
20  My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

For this last and final point I want to focus on what should be our goal in cooperating with the Spirit of God.

What the Spirit wants to do in the life of the believer in Christ, is to become the force that drives and powers and directs the life of the believer.

The indwelling presence of the Spirit and the work of the Spirit identifies YOU as a child of God who belongs to Christ, as one who had died and been crucified with him.

When you are born again, the Spirit of God becomes what drives your life.

No longer are we driven by the flesh, no longer are we driven by self, no longer our we in the drivers seat, but it is Christ that lives in you.

You as a born again child of God belong to Christ and the Spirit evidences itself by allowing you and by empowering you by the same Spirit that raised Christ up from the dead, to be able to live Spiritually in this earthly body, by faith and trust in the Son of God who loved us and gave himself for us.

This driving force powers us as believers and this Spirit identifies us as HIS,

It says in no uncertain terms I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you…

This is our blessed position which we must embrace and welcome in the fullness and totality of what the Spirit of God.

AMEN.

Today, we’ve talked about some of the incredible realties and blessings associated with being a born again child of God.

That God himself would take up residence in the life of a person, making his abode with us.

That he would change us Spiritually to be something more than just human beings who are powered by and dominated by sin and self.

That he would do this for us, in spite of our unworthiness is absolutely astounding.

To those who are born again children of God, we have the Spirit of God and that blessedness.

But what if you don’t have HIM.

What if all we spoke about today doesn’t apply to you because you are outside of the family of God and as the scripture said, you don’t have the Spirit of God and you are not his.

What if that is the position you are in this morning?

Does that have to define your life?

Absolutely not.

God so loved the world that he gave HIS only SON to die for the sins of the world and for every sinner.

We couldn’t save ourselves, so God sent his Son to save us.

He died and was buried but rose again on the third day and we accept that gift by placing our faith in him, repenting of our sinful ways and declaring Him as LORD.

That is how you get born again. That is how the Spirit of God comes to live in you and you are placed in HIM.

So if you want to do that today you can.

While all eyes are closed and heads are bowed….
